When the Kardinya Uniting Church was closed at the beginning of the Covid 19 virus, we decided to meet in a nearby park. This was so successful that when we were able to return to Church, we continue having a “Kardy Cuppa” every Friday morning.
During one of the morning tea chats, we discussed “The Scripture Cake” recipe one of our ladies found. This was so inspiring we decided to include it in the Sunday Service at the church on the 12th June 2022. In the end it became the sermon.
The photos show the cake and the ladies who took part bringing the readings from the Bible and sharing the scriptural lessons we find in the Bible for each ingredient. It shows them placing the ingredients from each reading on the table. The first knowledge of cake in the bible was when God told Elijah (1 Kings 17) to visit the town of Zarephath near Sidon. Where he met a widow. They made the cake.
The idea of the Scripture Cake goes back several hundred years in England but became popular in America in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. it aimed to teach girls how to cook, and with each ingredient a simple verse in the recipe, to teach them the Word of God. It became a popular puzzle or quiz to test the cook’s knowledge of scripture or encourage them to look up the Bible.
And it resulted in a delicious cake, as our congregation found out when we shared one that Sunday at morning tea!
